Releasing a new single entitled “Zelda,” Soulja Boy also samples the old-school theme of the series in the song. The cover art also depicts Toon Link beside the American rapper, but he’s holding what appears to be a crudely designed gun — something many fans of the Legend of Zelda may take issue with. Furthermore, it seems Soulja Boy has turned the title of classical entry Wind Waker into the Mula Maker.
When diving into the song, many are likely to realize that the song has little, if anything really, to do with the Legend of Zelda. It does open with the classic main theme of the franchise and features a refrain of making “green diamonds like Zelda.” Yet the rapper then goes on to discuss a murder case, money, women, and more. He does eventually return to playing PlayStation and mentions 007 and Ocarina of Time, but it seems the title was chosen to grab attention and not necessarily reflect the content of the song.
Many are also taking issue with the rapper’s word choice. Green diamonds clearly refer to the Rupee currency of the Legend of Zelda, but many don’t understand why he would choose “green diamonds” over the actual name of the currency. Moreover, many are wondering if he is mistaking Zelda for Link in this song, as it is Link - the playable character of the franchise - that goes around collecting Rupees, not the princess Zelda.
That said, mistaking the two is a common occurrence, and it’s possible the ambiguity was intentional on Soulja Boy’s part. It seems unlikely that this Legend of Zelda-inspired song hasn’t already gathered the attention of Nintendo, so it’ll be interesting to watch this situation as it develops.
